Global Youth Service Day 2016

April 15, 2016 began at The Warehouse with a warm welcome from Bloomington Mayor, John Hamilton, thanking all participants for getting involved in the community and participating in Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). Monroe County Youth Council (MCYC), a project of the Asset Building Coalition, the Bloomington Volunteer Network, the Youth Services Bureau, and the Monroe County Public Library, planned their celebration of the largest service event in the world. This year marks Bloomington’s 5th year participating in Global Youth Service Day. MCYC spent the last school year preparing for this day of volunteering by exploring local issues and planning projects to meet the needs of the community. Part of this planning involved creating six different service teams; each team had individual goals for the day from kicking off the Page by Page program promoting the 40 Developmental Assets in a local elementary school, to building nature trails and removing invasive plant species. MCYC far exceeded its recruiting goal of 250 students when over 450 applied to be a part of GYSD. Ultimately, over 330 students (which included more than 90 Edgewood students) and 30 adult volunteers served the local community with nine local agency partners to make another successful GYSD.
