RBBCSC was recently approved by the Indiana Dept. of Education (IDOE) and the RBBCSC School Board to hold eLearning days for the remainder of the 2018-2019 school year.  Below, please find some frequently asked questions and answers surrounding RBBCSC’s eLearning day plans.

Why is R-BB looking to use eLearning days?

eLearning days allow teaching and learning to continue when there would otherwise be a disruption to the school week because of inclement weather.  eLearning days give our corporation flexibility in how we utilize snow make-up days on the school calendar.

Is an eLearning day the same as the Performance Enrichment Day that was held in the fall?

No. R-BB’s ‘A’ letter grade rating and designation as a performance-qualified school district from the IDOE allowed R-BB to use a Performance Enrichment Day (PED) on Sept. 12, 2018.  During PED days, teachers are at school for professional development, while students are working from home. On eLearning days, both students and teachers work from home, and teachers will be more available for communication. PEDs cannot be used to make up inclement weather school cancellations (snow days), while eLearning days can.

Are the expectations for students on PEDs and eLearning days the same?

Yes. On both PEDs and eLearning days, students do not physically attend school but are still academically active in educational activities. Amount of expected time engaged with content and turn-in windows will vary between grade levels:
  • Elementary: 30-60 total minutes for Math & Reading; 10-20 minutes for a Related Arts class.
  • Secondary: Teachers will assign work generally equivalent to a typical homework assignment.  This will vary by subject, but will not exceed 30 min. per class.
Students will have two days to complete and turn in any work they were not able to access or complete on the PED or eLearning day.

Are the expectations for teachers on PEDs and eLearning days the same?

No.  On eLearning days, teachers will have set office hours to facilitate student|parent-teacher communication.  These hours will vary by building:
  • EPS & EIS: 9-11 am
  • EJHS: 10 am-12 pm
  • EHS: Staff availability will be organized into two groups by departments:
    • Group A (English, Science, Special Education, PE, and Business): 10 am-12 pm
    • Group B (Fine Arts, Social Studies, Math, World Languages, Agriculture): 11am-1pm
Will eLearning days be used for snow days this year?
  • If school is canceled due to inclement weather, the superintendent may choose to use the day as an eLearning day.  In this case, the day would not need to be made up at the end of the year. However, not all inclement weather days will be implemented as eLearning days.
  • The decision of whether an inclement weather day will be held as an eLearning day will be made by the superintendent on a case by case basis and announced at the same time and through the same modes of communication as the cancellation announcement.
  • No more than two eLearning days will be used in a five day period.
  • The built-in snow make-up day on April 12 will be a planned eLearning day.
How will my child access the material his/her teacher assigned?

All content will be assigned through the classroom teacher’s Learning Management System (LMS), generally Google Classroom.  The assigned work may or may not be designed to be completed on a device. All assigned material will be in-line with the curriculum currently being covered in class.

Elementary students will bring home their login information to be able to access their rbbschools.net Google account on a home device.  Please note that to access Google Classroom, the student must be signed in to Google with their rbbschools.net account - trying to access Google Classroom with a parent’s Google account will not work.  More information on how to access this platform from home can be found in this short tutorial video.

Prior to Feb. 1, it is advised that secondary students test their Chromebooks at home, making sure they can access files from Drive and they are able to connect to the internet at home.  Students should go to lsaccess.mn/login to access the RBBCSC web filter login. (This link is also housed under the district student bookmarks.) If your child has any issues connecting to Drive, loading files or connecting to the internet, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

What if we do not have internet connectivity at home?

For the March 27, 2019  and the April 12, 2019 planned eLearning days, secondary teachers will ensure that students have accessed any Google Docs, Slides or Sheets they will need prior to leaving school the day before.  This will allow students to access these materials in their Drive on their Chromebooks even without internet connectivity. Elementary teachers will build in time the following day to ensure that all students are able to access and complete their work.  For all students, there will be a two-day window of time to complete assigned work.

If you have additional concerns about your child accessing content due to device or internet access at your home, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher for support.

Will R-BB hold PEDs or eLearning days next school year?

R-BB’s ‘A’ letter grade rating and performance-qualified school district designation enables our district to hold PEDs for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years.  In March of 2019, the IDOE will open the application window for schools to apply for eLearning days for the following school year. Pending approval, RBBCSC does intend to utilize eLearning days in the 2019-2020 school year.

Who can I contact if I have other questions?
