Boys & Girls Club of Ellettsville

Good afternoon Parent & Guardians, Staff & Volunteers,

As the winter weather keeps getting colder and colder I thought it prudent to send out a reminder of our snow day policy.
If Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corp. closes for a snow day the Boys & Girls Club of Ellettsville will also be closed.
This means the BGCE will be closed for youth programming/child care. When RBBCSC opens back up so will the BGCE. I understand this is an inconvenience to all our families but we are thinking about the kiddos safety, your safety, as well as staff and volunteers safety.
The BGCE will continue to operate as normal on day that RBBCSC operates on a two hour delay.
We will make every effort to communicate our Snow Day closing through local media (TV, radio, online news). We will also make a post on our Facebook Page   if you have not liked our page please do so now. We use our Facebook Page as a newsletter to keep our Club families and friends informed.

As always I thank you for the trust you give us with the care of your children. This is a responsibility we take seriously and are proud to have.

Sincerely
Oscar Gonzalez

Small Card, BIG Results!

The Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Foundation is offering Major Saver cards for sale through the elementary schools and Edgewood Junior High.  Students will receive the sales packets on Wednesday, November 1st and continue selling the $15 discount cards until Wednesday, November 15th.    Proceeds from the sale of Major Saver cards directly support the participating schools and the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Foundation.

The 2017 participating restaurants/establishments include:  Urban Air Adventure Park, Wonderlab, Laser Lite Laser Tag, Los Chachos Mexican Cuisine, Hinkle’s Hamburgers, Denny’s, The Chocolate Moose, Jumpin’ Joey’s, Burger King, PS…East Coast Subs, Chicago’s Pizza, Carson’s BBQ, Mother Bear’s Pizza, Heritage Trail, White Castle, McDonald’s, Texas Roadhouse, Swing-In Pizza, Jiffy Treet Ice Cream, and Papa John’s.

Major Saver cards can be purchased via cash, check or online at www.majorsaver.com.  The online sale can be credited back to a particular student and school.  All cards purchased online will be mailed directly to the customer.

Major Saver is excited to roll out a new feature this year making online sales easier for friends and family!  On our homepage, you are able to enter your student’s information to create a CUSTOM LINK for your child that can be shared via social media or email.  This link will automatically credit the online sale to your student when friends and family use the link to make their purchase!

Major Saver cards can also be purchased, and credited to a student, through the Major Saver App.  Once the free app is downloaded to an Android or iOS device, buyers can choose a Major Saver card through the “buy cards” tab on the app.  Once the buyer completes the transaction the offers will be stored in the Major Saver App.  Buyers can then redeem offers directly from the app and do not need a physical card.

Major Saver stresses safe selling and discourages door to door campaigning. The company encourages students to sell to family members, church patrons, neighbors, other adults the family may know; and to always make sure their parents are involved.

Please consider purchasing one or more Major Saver cards this year to help benefit the Richland-Bean Blossom Community Education Foundation and participating schools.

 Thank you for your support!

STEAM and 4H - How do they fit together?

Did you know our local 4H clubs are run by Purdue Extension Educators? 4‑H science programs are available through local Monroe County clubs, and now through our schools at R-BB as we are now partnering with our Purdue Extension Educators in all grades K-5!  Your child can join for after-school fun AND maintain a year-long 4H membership to explore other program opportunities throughout the year!

Focus areas for 4‑H science programs include robotics, rocketry, environmental science, agri-science, biotechnology and veterinary science with students of all school ages! Special events like National Youth Science Day are special ways 4H is highlighting all science industries with our students!  Do you love science and fun science activities? 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) is the world’s largest youth-led science experiment and this year all R-BB fifth graders will be participating in the this year's project, titled Incredible Wearables This challenge engages students and challenges them to build a wearable fitness tracker of their own. This year's 4‑H NYSD event will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.

Contact your school's STEAM Coach for more information about the ways 4H is getting involved with science education throughout R-BB!

Did you know October 6 is Day of Design?

October 6 is the Day of Design - Day of Design is the first national movement created to teach kids how to use Design Thinking to solve STEM-oriented problems that face the new wave of 21st Century manufacturers. STEMconnector’s Day of DesignTM team is assembling industry and education leaders from around the country to create “challenges” that will inspire teachers and their students to apply teamwork and Design Thinking to create compelling and unique solutions. Teams will then create videos of their approach and their solution, which will earn them great prizes and become contributors to the greatest online repository of “Design Thinking-inspired” solutions in the world!  This is a great way for teachers to incorporate PBL into their classrooms!

STEMconnector®, a national consortium of companies, associations, government entities, and academic institutions focused on advancing STEM education, today announced a partnership with digital credential pioneer, Credly, that will bring digital badges to K-12 and collegiate students who complete challenges for the Day of Design.

Check out ideas and details at: http://dayofdesign.com/  Registration is now open for student teams!

Why Project-Based Learning? Why Growth Mindset? Building Our Culture

Have you wondered what Project-Based Learning really means and why (if) it's so important to your children? What about growth mindset? How does having a growth mindset really differ from a fixed mindset? Does your mindset really impact your performance? These are questions many teachers wonder right along with parents...afterall, a lot fo teachers ARE parents.

As a parent, you want your child to be prepared for their future but don't always know what that future will even look like, and that's where STEAM-based skills, Project-Based Learning, and a Growth Mindset all come into critical importance! We can't prepare our students for jobs that perhaps haven't even been yet defined. What we CAN prepare them with is a desire to solve problems, the need to navigate challenges, ways to communicate and interact successfully with peers, and the understanding that we can ALL learn and grow through problems.

Read this blog post about the connected nature of Project-Based Learning (PBL) and building a culture of growth mindset, where students feel equipped and empowered to make decisions regarding their own learning - a culture in which students are given opportunities to pursue knowledge and explore problems they can become passionate about! This is the learning we want taking place daily throughout R-BB schools!

STEAM Night Success!

Thank you to all who participated, presented, judged, showcased or supported STEAM Night at EPS and EIS last night! The event was a HUGE success with an unbelievable turnout!

A special thanks to our three (wildly popular) food vendors: The Big Cheeze, La Poblana and 812 BBQ! Despite the rain, they were kept busy throughout the evening!   Thank you also to all our community partners: Science fair judges, Baxter Scientific, Cook Aviation, Go Green, Ray Amos Plastics, Parks and Recreation, Scaily Tailz, Ivy Tech, Boys & Girls Club of Ellettsville, Purdue Extension/4H, LEAP, IU Makerspace, and our own EHS engineering students!  Thank you especially, to all of our student leaders had the courage to step up, share their work with peers and families - they're sure to be representing STEAM-related community partners themselves some day!

We hope you all enjoyed the showcase of hard work and innovative learning your children were able to share with families!

Spanish Exchange students visit EHS

Spanish Exchange students visit EHS
EHS Spanish teacher, Brittney Norman spent the 2014-2015 school year teaching English at IES Angel Corella, a high school in Colmenar Viejo, Madrid, Spain. She left there with a vision to create a partnership by means of a Spanish exchange program, allowing American and Spanish students a grander cultural experience. On Sunday, March 26, that became a reality as a group of 16 students and 2 teachers from IES Angel Corella arrived in the US, welcomed by several Edgewood host families. During their 10-day stay the students had the opportunity to attend classes at the high school with their host students on two separate days. They also took field trips to a variety of locations including downtown Bloomington and Indiana University,  Nashville, IN,  Blue Cavern Springs, Indianapolis and Louisville.  From bowling to high school athletic events, evening activities were scheduled as well, giving the Spanish exchange students a full spectrum of the American student culture.

Check out the blog from our visitors during their stay in America. (You may need to use your device's translation tool.)
