Spanish Exchange students visit EHS

Spanish Exchange students visit EHS
EHS Spanish teacher, Brittney Norman spent the 2014-2015 school year teaching English at IES Angel Corella, a high school in Colmenar Viejo, Madrid, Spain. She left there with a vision to create a partnership by means of a Spanish exchange program, allowing American and Spanish students a grander cultural experience. On Sunday, March 26, that became a reality as a group of 16 students and 2 teachers from IES Angel Corella arrived in the US, welcomed by several Edgewood host families. During their 10-day stay the students had the opportunity to attend classes at the high school with their host students on two separate days. They also took field trips to a variety of locations including downtown Bloomington and Indiana University,  Nashville, IN,  Blue Cavern Springs, Indianapolis and Louisville.  From bowling to high school athletic events, evening activities were scheduled as well, giving the Spanish exchange students a full spectrum of the American student culture.

Check out the blog from our visitors during their stay in America. (You may need to use your device's translation tool.)

Edgewood Students Meet Quebec

In June of this summer, 16 Edgewood students traveled to Quebec City, Canada for an immersion tour.  During the trip, they participated in fun activities, such as visiting an authentic sugar shack, playing interactive games related to 19th century military lifestyle, dancing on a river cruise down the St. Lawrence river, making copper art at the Copper Museum, visiting the Montmorency waterfall, and more.  Students had a great time and the BEST part for Madame Tiller was that throughout the trip the students spoke French with each other, the guide, and the locals.

Global Youth Service Day 2016

GYSD2016
April 15, 2016 began at The Warehouse with a warm welcome from Bloomington Mayor, John Hamilton, thanking all participants for getting involved in the community and participating in Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). Monroe County Youth Council (MCYC), a project of the Asset Building Coalition, the Bloomington Volunteer Network, the Youth Services Bureau, and the Monroe County Public Library, planned their celebration of the largest service event in the world. This year marks Bloomington’s 5th year participating in Global Youth Service Day. MCYC spent the last school year preparing for this day of volunteering by exploring local issues and planning projects to meet the needs of the community. Part of this planning involved creating six different service teams; each team had individual goals for the day from kicking off the Page by Page program promoting the 40 Developmental Assets in a local elementary school, to building nature trails and removing invasive plant species. MCYC far exceeded its recruiting goal of 250 students when over 450 applied to be a part of GYSD. Ultimately, over 330 students (which included more than 90 Edgewood students) and 30 adult volunteers served the local community with nine local agency partners to make another successful GYSD. (This blog was adapted from a letter by the MCYC.)

Announcing the NEW Harmony 3 Family Access for Parents and Students!

We are switching our current Harmony Parent/Student portal to the New Harmony 3 Family Access and all parents should have received an email with the link to log in, as well as instructions for the setup. Everyone needs to register with the new credentials, as we will eventually be turning off the current version of the program.

One of the advantages of the new Harmony 3 Family Access is that it allows parents and students to have separate accounts with their own user names and passwords to access information as well as set notifications. Because the accounts are separate, students will not be able to make changes to any of the settings made by parents.

In the new program you will be able add all your students into one login and to see the following:

Progress Reports Attendance Discipline Homework Agenda Online Payments Push Notification The new site link is:

The link is also posted on the corporation as well as each building website. We hope you enjoy the features of the new site!

EHS presents "The Wedding Singer"

wedding singerEdgewood Theater's fall musical, "The Wedding Singer" will run November 19, 20 and 21 at 7PM in the high school auditorium. General Admission is $8, students and seniors $5, and children under 2 are free. Based on the hit Adam Sandler movie, The Wedding Singer's sparkling score does for the '80s what Hairspray did for the '60s. The musical is set in 1985, where a rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey's favorite wedding singer. He's the life of the party, until his own fiancee leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. Come out to the EHS auditorium and catch the show for an evening of fun-filled entertainment. (submitted by Kathy Weller, Masqued Crafters Volunteer)

EHS Students Crush Goal for Canned Food Drive

image
Homecoming week tends to boost the Mustang school morale each year, pinning each class in a friendly competition to show the most school spirit. Classes are awarded points based on themed dress-up days, a Class Clash rivalry of events, and new this year, a "We CAN change the World" food drive, sponsored by the National Honor Society. NHS members set their goal high at 1000 cans, hoping each student would just donate 1-2 canned goods.

As the Homecoming week competition heated up among the classes, students became a little more focused on donating. David Hardy, a senior, asked for monetary donations from his peers to purchase just a few more items on the eve of the final event day. He was stunned to receive five times what he had expected, and was able to purchase 432 more items. One senior who had donated five dollars had this opinion, "Even if we lose the competition, we will still be able to feed all those who need it in the entire town of Ellettsville."

Ultimately the senior class won the Homecoming points for the canned food drive, but all EHS students were proven winners. The Mustang student body almost tripled the NHS goal by collecting around 2700 goods. These were donated to the Richland Township Trustee Food Pantry.
