STEAM Night Success!

Thank you to all who participated, presented, judged, showcased or supported STEAM Night at EPS and EIS last night! The event was a HUGE success with an unbelievable turnout!

A special thanks to our three (wildly popular) food vendors: The Big Cheeze, La Poblana and 812 BBQ! Despite the rain, they were kept busy throughout the evening!   Thank you also to all our community partners: Science fair judges, Baxter Scientific, Cook Aviation, Go Green, Ray Amos Plastics, Parks and Recreation, Scaily Tailz, Ivy Tech, Boys & Girls Club of Ellettsville, Purdue Extension/4H, LEAP, IU Makerspace, and our own EHS engineering students!  Thank you especially, to all of our student leaders had the courage to step up, share their work with peers and families - they're sure to be representing STEAM-related community partners themselves some day!

We hope you all enjoyed the showcase of hard work and innovative learning your children were able to share with families!

Powerful Messages About Engineering

From DiscoverE Learning, there are five powerful messages to share with your kids - especially your girls - about engineering.  Studies from Engineer Your Life and Changing the Conversation have found that girls:

1. Don't know what engineering is;

2. Think engineers must be exceptional at both math and science; and,

3. Believe engineering is difficult and challenging.

These same projects also found that when we change how we talk about engineering, we can change what they think about engineering.

Whether you are a parent, teacher, counselor, or volunteer here are FIVE things to share about engineers and their work.

Curiosity—Engineers ask lots of questions that start with: Why? How? What if?

Creativity—Engineering is a great outlet for the imagination—the perfect field for independent thinkers.

Teamwork—Engineering takes teamwork, and engineers work with all kinds of people inside and outside the field. Whether they’re designers or architects, doctors or entrepreneurs, engineers are surrounded by smart, inspiring people.

Opportunities
—An engineering degree offers lots of freedom in finding a person’s dream job. It can be a launching pad for jobs in business, design, medicine, law, and government. To employers or graduate schools, an engineering degree reflects a well-educated individual who has been taught ways of analyzing and solving problems that can lead to success in all kinds of fields.

Helping Others—Imagine what life would be like without pollution controls to preserve the environment, life-saving medical equipment, or low-cost building materials for fighting global poverty. All this takes engineering. In very real and concrete ways, engineers save lives, prevent disease, reduce poverty, and protect our planet.Want to learn about effective engineering messages?

EJHS Hosts Science Girls' STEM Careers Workshop

Thanks to Ms. Cagle and Mrs. Phillips for hosting EJHS' Science Girl's STEM Careers Workshop where 39 girls took a quiz to find out their STEM Type and then explored possible job opportunities. They then followed it up with a visit to the theater to see the movie#HiddenFigures about the African American female "Computers" who contributed their mathematical skills to the space race in the 1960s. What a fun #girlsinSTEM night!

Wondering how to get involved with STEM at EJHS? Email Ms. Cagle at ccagle@rbbschools.net!
